CHAPTER SIXTEEN

LIAM

Saturday meant no alarm, no rush to get up dressed and out the door. I woke to the sun streaming in my windows, Ayva’s warm, naked body curled beside me. The phrase in over my head played over and over, but I didn’t care.

I wrapped myself around her, and she murmured something in a sleepy voice. I cupped her breast, and she giggled, turning her head toward me, eyes still closed. She pressed her lips to mine. This was right, the details of it be damned.

I had her for breakfast. Hell, I’d give up food completely just to have her again and again.

We showered together after our morning delight, just talking about everything. The walls between us were gone, and I could see she was giving in just as much as I was.

Ayva slipped onto the breakfast bar stool, hair still damp and shrouded in my bathrobe, which swallowed her. I moved about whipping up an omelet, trying to keep my thoughts from drifting too much.

The toast popped up, and I buttered it, then plated her eggs beside some sliced oranges.

“It’s not Michelin star, but pretty good by my standards,” I said with a wink. I set down her plate and turned to quickly whip up my own. With my plate in one hand and a fresh cup of coffee in the other, I sat down to eat beside her.

She eyed the ketchup bottle with skepticism, like most people. "Ketchup with your eggs?" She wrinkled her nose. "Is that some secret bodyguard thing?"

I chuckled, squeezing a generous amount over my eggs. "Nah, my dad always ate eggs this way. I guess I picked up the habit."

Ayva’s bare knee brushed against my thigh. Contentment washed through me at her nearness. "So, you told me about him, but what about your mom? What’s she like?" she asked before taking a dainty bite of her own eggs.

Swallowing, I stared down at my plate. The truth was so easy to tell, but the urge to lie came. Liam the Bodyguard shouldn’t have the same life as Liam the Cop. I knew this. But she should have the truth. I wanted her to know me, the real me.

"She’s amazing. Still lives in the same apartment in Brooklyn where I grew up."

I told Ayva story after story as we lingered over cold coffee and the last crumbs of toast. With her chin propped on her hand, she listened intently, sometimes laughing or shaking her head in amusement.

A new ease had cocooned around us this morning, erasing the last barriers between us. Here, we were just Ayva and Liam.

She turned on her phone, which blew up with a variety of tones. Ayva scrunched her face and palmed her forehead. “I better go. Mila is on her way. She thinks I’m dead since you and I haven’t answered our phones.”

I chuckled. “We’ll be in trouble if mighty mouth gets back and finds you here in my robe.”

She touched my cheek, warmth spilling from her palm. "I think she’d approve of how happy you make me.
